Viruses seek out computers without virus software, so install protection. Check with your Internet provider if it provides security as part of the package.
*Purchase your own software package. Check the phone book for specialist computer companies or ask at computer shops in the high street. They will be able to advise. Our software, which acts as back-up to that employed by our Internet provider, costs just over £50 for three years for each Internet address and can be installed via a CD or over the Internet. It can be updated over the web.
l Instal a firewall, which gives an extra layer of protection. Any computer specialist can help.
*Learn to recognise dodgy emails. Those with a message saying 'hi', 'the information you requested' or 'approved' may be genuine but it is also the type of wording used by the virus writers.
* Beware attachments. Yes, they are the major way of transporting information over the web but they are also the vehicle for viruses. Open the wrong one and the virus explodes, wiping out data, making your machine run so slowly you cannot get any work done, and infecting everyone in your address book. Several years ago, one infamous bug appeared as a worm which ate its way through text before your eyes.
* If you do suspect a virus, ensure the offending item is deleted then removed from the deleted basket or recycle bin.
