A talented artist and designer, and a niece of Lord Barnard, has died after a long illness, aged 54.

Eirenice Gore-Booth, lived for many years in Staindrop and Gainford, County Durham. She died in Kempley, Gloucestershire, where she moved several months ago to be cared for by her family.

She took up watercolour painting after being inspired by the teachings of the late Ben Johnson, of Staindrop, and her work was always in demand.

Mrs Gore-Booth trained in interior design in London and then gave advice to companies and house owners. She helped with the design of the Spanish gallery, in the Bowes Museum.

Elizabeth Conran, former curator of the museum, said yesterday: "Eirenice was able to find and arrange the supply of a large amount of damask-style material which was perfect for the walls of the gallery."

A friend, Sheila Hutchinson, of Staindrop, said: "She was an interesting person who took her painting seriously. Her excellent work was in demand all over the region."

Before she became ill Mrs Gore-Booth taught Tai Chi, a form of Chinese exercise, to pupils at an after-school club in Gainford School.

She said she was happy to give her time to pass on knowledge that would benefit the children.

She is survived by her son Edward, a personnel expert in London, and daughter Olivia, a musician.

A funeral service will be at Gainford Parish Church onFriday, at 1.30pm. Donations in lieu of flowers are being invited for a cancer help centre.
