RELIGIOUS tolerance and harmony was the main theme at a day-long series of events held in Darlington at the weekend.
The second Khalsa Day, at the Darlington Gurdwara Sahib temple in Louisa Street, aimed to raise awareness of Sikh culture and was organised by Darlington Borough Council, the Sikh Akal Federation and the local youth offending team.
The star attraction was Dya Singh, of Australia, voted best male artist at this year's World Music Awards. Events included workshops and Sikh martial arts demonstrations. There were also speeches by community leaders.
The programme was broadcast live on Panjab Radio UK, and there were presentations from the Army, Darlington police and the Akal Federation.
Coun Bill Dixon, cabinet member for social services, said: "It was an example of how working with communities can develop a greater understanding and appreciation of different cultures."
