THE Normandy Veterans' Pilgrimage Club is holding a fundraising 1940s charity night next month.
Members raise money to help Second World War veterans visit the Normandy beaches for the annual D-Day commemorations, on June 6.
Next year they are planning a larger event to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings, which may be the last time many of the ageing ex-soldiers will be able to make the trip.
The next fundraising event for the Durham-based group is at Meadowfield Workingmen's Club, on Friday, September 19.
Entertainment will be provided by the Fairmead Concert Party, from Whitby, who specialise in the songs and dances of the 1940s. Partygoers are invited to get into the spirit of the occasion by wearing 1940s-style fancy dress.
Tickets, costing £3.50, are available by calling 0191-384 0343, or 0191-378 0324.
