THE Baltic arts centre in Gateshead yesterday welcomed its millionth visitor.
Outgoing director Sune Nordgren was waiting at the entrance to the £45m centre, to meet ten-year-old Heather Donald.
He presented the youngster with a bag of Baltic merchandise, which included a signed book and an Antony Gormley T-shirt. Her mother, Aileen, was welcomed with a bottle of champagne.
The building opened at one minute past midnight on July 13, last year, and was expected to clock up a million visitors in the next two weeks.
But bank holiday crowds - 7,000 on Sunday - helped the centre reach its target early.
Mr Nordgren said it was a fantastic achievement.
