THE future of a 170-year-old village pub, which was under threat last year, is to be secured.
The owners of the Raby Hunt Inn, at Summerhouse, near Darlington, are seeking permission to modify the premises to form a smaller pub and house.
In May last year, councillors refused permission for the pub to be closed after opposition from villagers.
But the new proposals mean a smaller pub would still be run and support for the plans has been given by a petition signed by 93 people.
Mike and Barbara Allison also want Darlington Borough Council to allow the building of a house and conversion of outbuildings on the site.
Councillors had previously expressed fears that the pub was no longer viable and was operating at a loss in recent years.
Planning committee members will decide whether to approve the plans on Wednesday.
A report to councillors says: "The previous concerns of residents and regular users of the pub now appear to have changed as a result of the current application and a significant number are now in full support.
"The applicant is also willing to enter into a legal agreement preventing alternative uses."
The Darlington branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) has reiterated its objection to the plans, saying the Raby Hunt is the "finest remaining traditional country pub in the borough.
