Sunderland Catholic Club Over-40s League: Ferryhill Greyhound defeated Norton-Stockton 4-1 at home in the Premier Division.
Norton had to field an understrength side owing to the holidays and work commitments, they had the bare 11 and when Beasley was injured and had to leave the field they were reduced to ten men for the rest of the game.
Ferryhill looked good and appear to have a well-balance side but time will show how good they are against superior opposition. Ferryhill opened the scoring when Stan Cummings slotted home a spot kick for a foul of Martin McQuader. Gregg Mason made it 2-0 when he out away a cross from Kevin Liddler. After the restart Mason made it 3-0 and Stan Cummings made it 4-0 with a delightful also effort. Norton pulled one back in the closing stages.
Despite scoring first Darlington Croft were unable to contain Owton Manor and lost 4-1 away. The Manor quickly levelled through Dennis Chapman and then went 2-1 up again through Chapman. Close on the break Mottram scored with a penalty to make it 3-0. After the restart the Manor were content to hold onto their lead and did eventually go 4-1 up. when Linneghan headed home a cross from Bainbridge.
In the Villa Real Cup Second Round Glaxo were too strong for Wingate winning 4-1 at home. Consett found West Cornforth a hard proposition but managed a 1-0 home win. Billingham Town started off in fine style and went 2-0 up in the opening minutes courtesy of a brace from Tony Screen but Houghton Swifts pulled one back just before the interval. The restart saw Screen complete his hat-trick to put Billingham 3-1 in the lead. Then the home side made a blinder by altering the team in the closing minutes and Houghton came back strongly to score two late goals and force an extra time, no goals being scored penalties were necessary. Tony Screen put away the deciding kick to net a fourth goal and give Billingham a 4-3 win on penalties.
Sedgefield scored in both halfs to win 2-0 against Pennywell Comrades the first being an own goal and the second a penalty kick.
Langley Park Rams Head were in fine form winning 5-2 at home against Durham. Trimdon Veterans sprang a surprise by winning 3-2 away to Division Two side The Willow Pond. They began with attacking football and goals from Smith and Malcolm Bean pout them 2-0 up. The Pond however fought back strongly and Reuben Gibson scored to make it 1-2 at the interval. The restart saw end to end football and finally Gibson scored his second goal of the match and level the scores 2-2.
With a minute left John Everson's long throw-in reached Smith who turned and drove the ball home to give Trimdon a 3-2 victory.
Wynyard Old Boys just could not hold Division One Newton Aycliffe who ran out comfortable 6-0 winners.
Wynyard Veterans won 8-1 at home against Gateshead Greencroft. The visitors had to field an understrength side as Newcastle were at home and paid the price, they held the Vets to a first half 1-1 draw but tired rapidly after the restart. Scorers for the Vets were Freddy Surplus, Peter Baldison, Kenny Clark, Peter Allan and a hat trick from new signing Alan Jackson and an own goal.
