HEALTH watchdogs have praised a facility which supports people with drug and alcohol problems in Darlington.
Representatives of Darlington and Teesdale Community Health Council visited the Elmfield Centre, which has been running in the town since 1993.
They found that many aspects of its work had improved since their last visit in November 1999, including the fabric and decoration of the building and a reduction in the average assessment waiting time from 24 weeks to six weeks.
The assessment process determines the client's level of dependency and, if detoxification is needed for alcohol addicts, it is arranged on an in-patient basis, or at home if considered appropriate.
The centre received 339 referrals from April last year to this March and is developing projects to boost its service
