A 24-year-old soldier was remanded in custody today charged with the murder of a fellow soldier at an army base in Northern Ireland.
John Smith, a Green Howard, whose address was given as c/o Shackleton Barracks, appeared before Londonderry Magistrates' Court accused of shooting dead Dean Eddy, 21, a Coldstream Guard from Cleveland in Middlesbrough.
The shooting took place at Shackleton Barracks in Ballykelly, Co Londonderry, shortly before 8.30pm on Saturday when it is understood the two men were on guard duty.
Smith, who appeared in the dock wearing civilian clothing, spoke only once during the brief hearing, answering ''yes'' when asked if he understood the charge against him.
A detective sergeant told the court Smith made no reply when charged with murder at Coleraine police station last night.
But he said he believed he could connect the accused with the charge.
Smith, who arrived at the hearing with a blanket over his head, was remanded in custody to appear at the same court via video link on September 29.
