COMPUTER hackers can obtain personal bank details and hospital records at the click of a button, a security expert has revealed.
And thousands of businesses in the North-East and North Yorkshire using the latest wireless technology are at risk.
In one afternoon, security expert Raza Sharif identified more than 40 organisations in Newcastle whose computer networks are open to abuse.
Using a simple tracking system connected to a laptop computer, Mr Sharif drove through the city and identified vulnerable banks, businesses hospitals, and academic institutions.
At-risk organisations detected by the tracking system included a hospital and a number of banks.
For £2,000, anyone with specialist knowledge can buy a laptop, software and wireless receiving equipment to tap into files and download highly personal information.
Once access is gained, a hacker has the potential to shut down a network, access confidential information for personal gain or alter information to files.
Computer hacking is illegal but it is also extremely difficult to identify the culprits and make successful prosecutions.
Mr Sharif, 35, of Fenham, Newcastle, uses his equipment to identify security breaches for businesses. He identifies those organisations that are at risk, but does not access the information.
He is working towards opening a business providing advice for organisations in the North-East on how to secure their computer networks.
