The pub at the centre of an incident that resulted in a man's death could be demolished to make way for houses.
The Rise Carr Hotel, in Darlington, has been closed since the death of David Willis, 51, last year.
Wharton Construction has applied for planning permission from Darlington Borough Council to demolish the Whessoe Road pub and build four terraced homes.
Painter and decorator Mr Willis died days after he fell and hit his head during an argument with pub manager Steve Webb.
Mr Webb was charged with manslaughter but the charges were later dropped. He chose not to return to work at the pub.
The owners, Hartlepool firm Pubmaster, put the pub up for sale in December.
