LOCAL dialects from all over the North-East and North Yorkshire will be heard when members of dialect societies meet to exchange some of their favourite sayings on Saturday.
More than 100 enthusiasts are expected to gather for a celebration called Dialect Delights in the village hall at Boldron, near Barnard Castle, County Durham.
They will give examples of the way people talk in the East Riding and other parts of Yorkshire, Tees Valley, Durham and Tyneside, Northumberland, Lakeland and Lancashire.
The meeting starts at 1.30pm with an address by Dr Clive Upton, senior lecturer in English language at Leeds University.
One of the organisers is Ruth Dent, of Marwood, Barnard Castle, who has written two books of poetry in dialect and is well-known for giving readings in a North Riding dialect.
Mrs Dent said: "It is fascinating to hear dialects from other parts of the country. It will be a real treat to hear so many during one afternoon."
She will be one of the speakers giving examples of the words and phrases used in her native part of the world, which was the Leyburn area of North Yorkshire.
