Hundreds of people packed into Richmond Methodist Church for the funeral of Enid Shaw, who died at the town's Friary Hospital on August 16 of cancer.
Mrs Shaw, widow of builder George Shaw, was a founder member of the Ladies' Circle after her husband established the town's Round Table. She was also a founder of Richmond Ladies' Luncheon Club and a member of the ladies' section of the Freemasons' lodge, of which Mr Shaw was a member.
She was born Enid Hodgson, the youngest of four children of a Richmond solicitor. She was unable to pursue a teaching career because of her father's death, and worked in his practice.
The family moved from Reeth Road to live in the business premises in Rosemary Lane, where the practice, Hodgson and Mortimer, survives.
She met her future husband through her brothers. They were married in May 1948. She helped her husband in the office of his construction company and the couple had one child, Elizabeth.
The family lived in Marske Hall, in Swaledale, and in Maison Dieu. Mrs Shaw loved gardening, bridge, enjoyed travel and loved her dogs.
