Plans to extend a nightclub have been attacked by a local vicar.

Carrington's, in Station Parade, in the central Harrogate conservation area, North Yorkshire, has lodged plans for a three-storey rear extension overlooking Rogers Almshouses, in Rogers Square.

The vicar of St Peter's Church, Canon Tony Shepherd, who is chairman of the almshouses trustees, criticised the move, and said the elderly residents already suffer disturbances night after night.

He said: "They are disturbed by the rumbling bass notes of music from the club, by the noise of the extractor fans and by the subsequent dispersal of those leaving the premises.

"There is no doubt in the minds of the residents and the trustees that there is significant loss of amenity and noise pollution."

Canon Shepherd said extending the building would bring the noise even closer to the almshouses. He will speak on behalf of the residents when the plans are debated by Harrogate Borough Council on Tuesday.

The planning application, which has brought three letters of objection, seeks to extend the nightclub, provide a lounge bar and toilets with offices on the first floor, and a two-bedroomed flat on the second floor.

Planning officers believe the scheme will be acceptable provided the club submits a report on noise-prevention measures.
