Sunderland could be tempted to rival Nottingham Forest for transfer-listed Newcastle United left-back Robbie Elliott.
The Geordie defender yesterday admitted he is open to any offers as he looks to relaunch his stagnant career.
Elliott, whose only start last season came in a Worthington Cup tie against Everton, was among five players listed by United manager Sir Bobby Robson this summer.
Forest have been credited with a loan interest in Elliott, and Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy may be keen on a similar deal after Michael Gray's temporary move to Celtic on a four-month agreement.
McCarthy has overseen the departures of 23 players as the Black Cats have undertaken a drastic cost-cutting exercise in the wake of relegation. The former Republic of Ireland manager has operated largely with either George McCartney or Julio Arca at left-back this season, but ideally would like more cover. Elliott, 29 and in his second spell with home-town club Newcastle, is out of contract at the end of the season.
Signed by Robson on a free transfer from Bolton Wanderers two years ago, Elliott has failed to re-establish himself at St. James' Park after briefly being a hit under Kevin Keegan and Kenny Dalglish.
He said: "I haven't turned anyone down and I'd be very interested in moving to a club offering first-team football.
"Forest have been mentioned and there's also another First Division club apparently interested.
"It's good to know clubs are aware of my situation.
"If Newcastle can agree a deal with Forest or any other club, then I'd be happy to move on a loan deal.
"Forest are certainly a club I'd be interested in, particularly on the basis of a loan deal, as it would give both sides a chance to take a look at each other.''
Fellow left-back Wayne Quinn, among the quintet deemed surplus on Tyneside, is wanted on loan by Walsall.
