A SURPRISE guest attended a Darlington school to present prizes to pupils at a special summer workshops.
The identity of the Darlington Football Club player was kept a closely guarded secret until the presentation at Hummersknott Comprehensive. Nearly 30 children attended a week-long literacy event to help them to prepare for the new autumn term. All the youngsters were below the national standards in literacy but the summer school proved a huge success.
Organiser Carol Hartley said: "They have absolutely loved it and the school was a great success.
"We had pupils who made over two years reading improvement in only four days. They were very excited about the mystery guest."
The man of the moment turned out to be Quakers star Ian Clarke.
