A NORTH Yorkshire breeder paid the highest price at a Carlisle sale of pedigree Charolais cows and heifers which saw JSR Farms of Pocklington, near York, sell a major portion of their Givendale herd.
Dick Garner and Son of Kirkby Fleetham paid 6,500gns for Givendale Samba, a January 2001-born heifer in calf to Givendale Operator, with a beef value within the breed's top 1pc at CH36. Samba was sired by Balthayock Marius, which has led the breed's top 100 young bulls on beef value and which went on to be national trait leader for beef value and muscle depth.
The Garners also paid 6,000gns for Givendale Sanicle CH38, another 20-month-old by Marius and in-calf to Operator.
The sale included some of the breed's highest genetic merit cattle - average beef values were all within the top 10pc.
Auctioneers: Harrison and Hetherington.
Averages: 61 cows and heifers served or suckling £1,578.44; 16 served heifers £1,790.91; 14 maidens £853.50.
