Bream showed in decent numbers for the 38 competitors who turned out to fish the Thornaby Town Council Annual Show Open on Saturday.

Staged on the Lower Tees downstream of Bassleton Wood it was left to Diawa Cleveland youngster Rob Morgan to show the others how it's done.

In the bottom of the wood, Rob fished midriver on the groundbait feeder and worm netting 11 bream the best one going 3.8.0 for 27.9.0 at the finish.

Meanwhile on the adjoining peg RSPS Tek Neek Trabucco veteran Jim Taylor put up a strong challenge.

A lost mirror carp estimated at 8.0.0 agonisingly came off at the landing net and ultimately cost Jim the match as his 10 bream totalled 23.0.0.

Still on the Lower reaches, Sunday's penultimate round of the Drennan Super League Northern Division got underway around Yarm and Big Waters Trevor Walker weighed in 9.15.0 to take the individual stakes.

At the bottom of the Stricklands Farm length on peg 68, Trevor chose the maggot feeder tight across extracting 2 chub 3.8.0 apiece and then supplementing the rest of his catch with perch.

For Newman Scott man Phil Arnold small silver fish ruled. Pegged opposite Whitehouse Farm on 180, pole and squatt at 9 metres accounted for 8.15.0.

Team wise Diawa Cleveland finished first on the day accruing 72 points but next Sunday's decider at Woodland Lakes sees favourites Newman Scott holding an 8 point advantage over nearest rivals Shimano Quaker A.

Overall placings: 1 Newman Scott 332; 2 Shimano Quaker A 324; 3 Diawa Cleveland 322; jt 4 Big Waters & Shotton AC MG 262; 6 Anglers Services Durham 232.

Individuals: 1 P Close (Shimano Quaker) 51 pts; jt 2 M Lovelass (Shimano Quaker) & G Douglas (Diawa Cleveland) 48; 4 D Fox (Shotton AC MG) 47.

In the Ripon Piscatorials Alma Cup many of the 54 rods struggled for bites on a low clear Ure.

Fished below Barn Island, Ripon's Ray Gilby and Robin Pickles of KL Tackle made the results look respectable.

Ray grabbed the honours returning 23.0.0 of chub. Staked in Foxtons's field a long cast to the island on bomb and wasp cake resulted in seven similar sized samples.

A big bream lost and victory slipped away for Robin when his net registered 21.0.0.

Groundbait feeder with worm caster cocktail on the hook brought a trio of bream from above the noted diving board.

A draw in the streams below Maunby Village rapids on the River Swale was crucial for success during Idle & Thackley's Open at Swainby.

Brotherton's Brian Higgins pulled out the plum draw peg 45 and left the rest trailing with a chub bag of 28.14.0. The magic wasp cake and bomb proved the method nailed down in the fast water for specimens upto 4.8.0.

Next peg downstream produced the runner up when Darlington's Colin Jackson also located chub to stickfloat and caster for 20.0.8.

Carp News

It was watch out for Tek Neek Trabucco Elton's Dean Smith who continues to dominate match results at the Woodland Lakes and the Oaks Sessay.

Bank Holiday Monday started the onslaught when Dean hammered out 128.1.0 of carp off Partridge Lake 22 at the Woodlands.

Then in Woodland's midweeker Dean gave the 54 hopefuls a thrashing when he hauled out an incredible 131.10.0.

On Skylark 27, Dean had mainly carp up to 4.0.0 along with some chub and ide. Starting off at six metres on pellet and meat he then proceeded to push out to 15 metres and caught up in the water over 'little and often' caster catapult feeding.

The next day, following a good night's sleep, Dean did it all over again this time bagging up at the Oaks Open at Sessay on Thursday.

The legend fished Peg 20 on Maple Lake and put the venue record, which stands at 129.0.0 in jeopardy rattling out carp after carp - best one 4.0.0 - all to pellet at 13 metres for 115.0.0

Oaks Sessay (Sunday) Maple Lake (50 pegs): 1 D Smith (Tek Neek Trabucco Elton) 77.14.0. 2 C Hall (Oaks) 67.12.0; 3 M Coyne (Map Elton) 53.4.0.

Woodland Lakes (Saturday) Skylark & Partridge (71 pegs): 1 R Singh (Map Elton) 79.6.0; 2 M Coyne (Map Elton) 77.0.0; 3 P Sellars (Elton Tackle) 72.14.0; 4 M Vanderkamp (Sensas Garbolino) 62.15.0; 5 D Smith (Tek Neek Trabucco Elton) 58.9.0.

Juniors

The end of summer holidays Junior Open on Woodland's Kestrel Lake brought plenty of fish. Stockton's Sebastian Steele competing in his first ever match took an impressive 39.6.0 to win this four-hour event.

The 15-year-old star drew peg 30 and picked up carp bream and tench to pellet on the pole at five metres. Northallerton's Joe Hardcastle followed with carp and one bream which took the scales to 31.1.0 as pole and meat at seven metres produced off peg 5 from Ray Cooper of Darlington 21.8.0.

All round an excellent match sponsored by Kamasan and on site Elton Tackle saw all the youngsters went home happy with tackle prizes.
