Bishop Auckland have lifted the Team of the Month award for August - but they might not win it again in September.

Bishops won three of their four league games in the month and drew the other, as well as thrashing Flixton 8-0 in the FA Cup, to give them a great start to the season.

But the curse struck on Tuesday night when they lost 2-0 at Bridlington Town.

Manager Brian Honour said: "I thought Bridlington were a little bit hungrier than we were, but having said that, they are a very good side. I'm pleased the game is out of the way now, because they will be up there challenging for promotion.

"It was a very quiet bus on the way home, and that goes to show how much the lads care about doing well."

Honour is hoping that midfielder Craig Robson will be returning soon after his spell in Canadian football with Vancouver Whitecaps. His team is involved in the end of season play-offs, and he should be back within a fortnight.

Bishops' 8-0 win over Flixton on Sunday could have been more if it wasn't for some sloppy finishing and good goalkeeping. Flixton were without seven players who preferred to play Sunday morning football.

Spennymoor are hoping their season is going to lift off after winning 2-0 at Blyth, less than a fortnight after losing 5-0 to the same team.

Manager Tony Lee, who took over again last Sunday, included new signings Craig Skelton from Billingham Town and keeper Kevin Duncan from Hartlepool in his line-up.

"I thought the players responded very well, and there was a very good reaction from them and the fans about the way they played.

"Everybody played well, especially the lads at the back, but it's still going to take a few games to get sorted."

Lee hasn't ruled out bringing more players in before tomorrow's game at Runcorn. Moors still have their eyes on four Northern League players.

Gateshead are facing a one-point deduction for playing an ineligible player.

Gateshead used Robert Southern, a defender, in their 0-0 draw at Leek on the opening day of the season when he wasn't registered in time for the game.

However, under UniBond League rules - which are different to Northern League rules - the match won't have to be replayed. Gateshead could be fined around £500.

Meanwhile, Gateshead manager Derek Bell has released strikers Willie Moat and Michael Dickinson following Gateshead's failure to beat Liversedge in the preliminary round of the FA Cup last Saturday.

Whitby have re-signed striker Jamie Burt.

Burt played for the Seasiders in their FA Cup run two years ago, and joined Second Division Chesterfield.

However, he failed to hold down a regular first team place, and has now been released. Whitby boss Harry Dunn was hoping to sign him before last Saturday's game at Southport, but Scarborough nipped in first - and played him as a full back. Burt quickly left, and joined Whitby in midweek.

He played in the 2-1 win over Gainsborough in midweek, in which former Darlington player Paul Campbell scored from the edge of the box, and Craig Veart got the winner from the spot.

Former Darlington midfielder Mark Ford has signed for UniBond League club Harrogate Town.
