THOUSANDS of guides to patient services will be dropping through letterboxes in Darlington soon.

The second annual guide has been produced by Darlington Primary Care Trust to keep residents up to date with local health services.

The Your Guide to Health Services booklet outlines how the trust is spending its annual budget of more than £100m on health care for Darlington's 101,000 population.

It also sets out plans for the future, which include opening a £1m "super surgery" in King Street, reducing waiting times, improving access to GPs and preventing unnecessary admissions to hospital.

Andrea Jones, of the trust, said: "Public expectations of the NHS are high. People hear about the extra money that has been and will be coming into the service and wonder where it is going. This guide brings them up to date."

It also features details about community organisations, including Mind, Age Concern and Cancerlink.

The booklet also encourages patient and public involvement in the health service by offering contact numbers and an online discussion forum at the trust's website, www.darlingtonpct. nhs.uk
