STUDENTS at North-East universities have been shortlisted in a media competition.
Degrees North, the University of Sunderland's student newspaper, has been recommended for student magazine of the year and small budget publication of the year in the Guardian Student Media awards.
Durham 21, Durham University's student website, has been shortlisted in the Internet category and Oliver Brown, from the university's student newspaper, Palatinate, is in the running for student reporter of the year.
His colleague Eleanor Tennant has been nominated for for student feature writer.
The shortlist was decided by a panel that included Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, Rebekah Wade, editor of The Sun, Jon Snow of Channel 4 News, Martin Bashir, reporter with Tonight with Trevor McDonald, and Film 2003 presenter Jonathan Ross.
The awards, which are now in their 25th year, carry prizes that include work experience with The Guardian, European flights from easyJet and a six-week work placement with Sky News.
Winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on Wednesday, November 12.
