VOLUNTEERS are needed in Durham to help children from Belarus who are still suffering the after-effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
The Chernobyl Children's Life Line enables children, aged between eight and 15, to visit England for a month, to give their immune system a rest from the radiation.
The children are taken out on trips and days out to beauty spots and attractions.
Now efforts are being made to set up a Durham link of the charity, with people who can host children for the month, take them out for the day, or help set up the branch.
Ruth Bond, who runs a group in Washington, said: "The kids are still suffering the effects of the Chernobyl disaster, which will continue for another 2,000 years." Anyone interested in helping is asked to call 0191-416 2357.
