YORKSHIRE Water has pledged that work on drains and sewers in a town market place will be completed by the end of next month.
Contractors have assured Thirsk Chamber of Trade that work throughout the area will be completed by the end of October in time for the build-up to Christmas shopping.
Business people and residents had raised concerns about road closures, and after negotiation it was agreed to change the dates of the work to ensure the smooth running of businesses.
Roads in Market Place and surrounding areas will be closed on several days, but notice will be given and businesses with supply problems will be given bottled water.
Work started yesterday in Bridge Street and Millgate, and next Monday contractors move to the Piper Lane area for five days, and then to Finkle Street on September 29 for 20 days.
The work in Market Place will take two weeks. Diversion signs will be in place during each section of work.
Jill Miller, vice-chairman of the Chamber of Trade, said: "It is going to be inconvenient for a while, but Yorkshire Water has done its best to negotiate with us and we do appreciate that this work needs doing.
