THE Bishop of Durham is making a seven-day pilgrimage around some of the major historic and tourism sites in his new diocese next month.
The Right Reverend Tom Wright sets out on his long walk on Sunday, October 5, in Jarrow, at St Paul's Church. He will follow the route of the Annual Pilgrimage Walk to Wearmouth accompanied by a small group and is expected to be joined by clergy and lay people along the way.
The final leg will be on October 12 when Dr Wright and his companions will be joined by Jarrow's Bishop John Pritchard, Bishop Joseph Tsubella of Lesotho and Bishop Stephen Sykes, principal of St John's College, Durham.
They will walk from Chester-le-Street via Finchale Abbey, where they will stop for prayers, arriving in Durham for Dr Wright's inauguration and enthronement in Durham Cathedral at 3pm.
Other places to be visited include the National Glass Centre, Sunderland, the Teesside Transporter Bridge and the Angel of the North. To reach as wide a variety of places as possible, some of the journey will be on public transport, but most of it will be on foot.
