OLDER people in Darlington have been using their creative skills to make reading fun for children.
Ten of the town's sheltered housing schemes took part in a Summer Storysack Challenge, producing bags packed with toys and props based on a chosen book.
Councillor Bill Dixon, chairman of Darlington's Storysacks Association, judged the entries.
He said: "The attention to detail and creativity that has been shown is quite amazing."
The story sacks will go into Darlington Storysacks Library, at Corporation Road Community Primary School, where they can be accessed free by anyone who has or works with young children.
The winner of the challenge, Dalkeith House, was announced at a ceremony at Morton Park Business Suite on Tuesday.
Runners-up were Branksome Hall, with the third prize going to Dinsdale Court.
Each team received a floral tribute and chocolates.
The winning group received a crystal rose bowl.
The competition was organised by Darlington Borough Council as part of its Darlington, Active, Independent, Staying Young (Daisy) initiative for people over 50.
