FILM crews and archaeology-buffs took to the skies over one of the county's ancient ruins yesterday in the hope of discovering evidence of the past.
The presenters and producers of BBC Scotland's TimeFlyers programme boarded the helicopter at Rievaulx Abbey, near Helmsley, to capture over-views of the land surrounding the abbey.
The view from the air allowed presenters Mark Horton and Dave MacLeod, of English Heritage in York, to establish just how far the Rievaulx's land spread when it was inhabited by the medieval Cistercian monks.
Producers hope that further research of the footage will help them spot archaeological evidence of ancient iron workings and the mining landscape.
Landing in the cloister of Rievaulx Abbey, it was the first time a helicopter had come so close to the ruins in filming. The series will be aired on BBC 2 from Tuesday, October 14.
