Durham City Harriers: Shaun Moralee, 18, from Langley Park and representing Durham City Harriers had a brilliant run in the final of the North of England inter-club cup at Cudworth, Barnsley.
Shaun was competing in the senior men's 800m and in the race of the day managed to pull off a great victory and set another personal best time of 1:53.63 with all eight athletes getting under two minutes.

At the end of a great competition Durham City Harriers finished sixth out of the eight teams who had qualified for the final.
Team results: 1 Trafford AC 134 points; 2 City of Sheffield 127; 3 Liverpool 84; 4 Leeds 84; 5 Border Harriers 67; 6 Durham City 65; 7 Derby 65; 8 Bolton Harriers 65; positions decided on countback.
Since then Shaun, as a result of his fine performance at Cudworth and his excellent performances throughout the season, was selected for the North of England in the inter-area match at Watford (U20) against the Midlands and the South, his first representative honour.
As it happened Shaun was selected for the 1500m in this match and pulled off a fine victory hitting the front when it mattered in a tactical race to gain maximum points for the North in a good time of 4:01.01.
Teesdale Triathlon
The 12th Teesdale Triathlon, based at Teesdale Leisure Centre in Barnard Castle, saw the usual good turnout of competitors on a bright and dry day at the end of August.
The course is a challenging one, including a scenic and undulating 28km Bike leg.
Scott Holmes (TFN) was first male in 01:21.10. Scott also won the Durham Dales Triathlon Challenge (of which the Teesdale event is the final race).
Second man home was Chris Lax (Hartlepool Triathletes), and in third was Dann Brook (Sheffield Tri.) in 01:22.09.
Durham Tri Club was well-represented with members in all age-groups turning out. One of their members, Donna James, was first Female overall in 01:36.32.
Other results: 2nd female, Jo-Ann Short (01:41.08), 3rd female, Kay Wilson (01:56.23); 1st Male, Paul Utterson (01:27.00), 2nd male, Sean Gilmour (01:28.55), 3rd Male, Paul Doran (01:31.51).
A highlight for the club was the personal best for V50 age-grouper John Lavender. The Tyneside-based athlete knocked over nine minutes off his personal course-time, thanks largely to a good bike leg.
Triathlon-debutant Ellen-Anne Mackenzie, a Female age-grouper from Durham City made it round the course in 02:39.05 ,but achieved her stated objective in finishing the event.

OSunday, June 15, the 3rd Durham Dales Fell Series was held - Chapelfell. In extremely hot conditions Michael Mallen of Crook won the race in a time of 36:08.

Ian Scott was the only Quaker participant at the Eccup 10 mile road race near Leeds on Sunday, July 20. Ian cruised round the undulating course in 59:31 breaking the club record for male over 50 and took the 1st vet over 50 prize to finish 5th overall out of 344 competitors.
On Sunday, July 27, the 4th Durham Dales Fell Series was held - Monks Moor. First home in an excellent time of 01:29:52 was Ed Nash from Kendal.

Richmond and Zetland Harriers
Seven athletes from Richmond and Zetland Harriers competed at The Gateshead International Stadium on Saturday, August 23 in the tenth Annual Tartan Games - the biggest end-of-season one-day Open Medal T&F Meeting. Chris Betts, Meeting Organiser, reported that there were more than 600 athletes competing and a total of 1094 performances recorded, that there were numerous meeting records set and a world record in the CP Sports Discus where Danny West threw 36m79. For the Harriers, Sophie Broadway, competing as a first-year under 15 just a month after her 13th birthday, was "Queen-for-a-day" after placing third in the final of the 200m and winning the bronze medal.

On Sunday, August 24, the Senior Men's team travelled to the Dorothy Hyman Stadium at Cudworth near Barnsley for the Northern Men's T&F League Knockout Plate Final. The eight-strong team were without several key athletes, most notably John Wild, who had come home injured from Hungary where he had been throwing in an International Veteran's Meeting. "Out of adversity comes strength" according to someone wise and appropriately there were several fine performances - Ken Harker won the 1500m with a superb demonstration of front-running, Jon Orange placed second to former International and fellow Veteran John Convery of Bingley in the 5000m, Dan Brooks ran a season's-best 62.78 for second in the 400m hurdles (just one of five individual events and both relays in his usual busy afternoon), Sam Stanislaus also earned a second place in the triple jump and Shaun Purkiss-McEndoo was proverbially over-the-moon with his sub-35 minute clocking for 10,000m. Although the times and distances for the sprints and throws won't be added to any athlete's CV, the team acquitted itself well enough to finish the day in 6th place with 79 points, a mere 40 points behind winners Chesterfield & District AC.

On the Bank Holiday Monday, Scarlett Gray ran her first six-mile race at Bishop Monkton. Scarlett had her Dad for company on the half road/half cross-country course and finished in a time of 40:31 to place 19th overall, 3rd female and earn third prize.
This weekend is the last before the Great North Runs and there is a new event for all to try-out their racing legs on Saturday - the Bowes Agricultural Show Races, multi-terrain races from 3K to 10K with prizes for all ages, at The Parks, Home Farm, Gilmonby from 3.30 pm. The 2nd Castleton Show Run, a 10K road race, is also on Saturday, starting from the Cricket/Show field at 1.30 pm and on Sunday there is the Burnsall Feast Fell Race starting at 12 noon.
