THOUSANDS of people took up the chance to enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at the work of the police.
About 5,000 visited an open day at the headquarters of Gateshead West Area Command in Front Street, Whickham.
Police said the majority of those who returned feedback forms after the event said they felt more reassured and more confident about local policing.
The open day's attractions included a tour of the station's cell block, a visit by two of Northumbria's horses and a display by the dog section.
There were also officers from the Marine Unit, a Motor Patrols car and the organisation's Harley Davidson police bike.
The North East Air Support Unit showed videos of the work carried out by the force helicopter and plane.
Chief Inspector Ralph Logan, of Gateshead West Area Command, said: "The feedback has been very positive.
"It is heartening to know the vast majority of people, who are often the silent majority, are supportive of what we do."
