A SPECTACULAR collection of some of the country's finest modern jewellery has gone on show for the first time outside London.
Fairfax House - regarded as the gem of York's Georgian townhouses - is the showcase for the collection from the Goldsmith's Hall.
The work of 75 designers from the past 40 years is represented in the collection, considered one of the best of its kind.
"It is tempting to think of designer jewellery as a relatively modern concept," said Fairfax House director Peter Brown.
"But history shows this is not the case, as glorious finds from the graves of ancients prove.
"What modern designers have done, apart from casting off the constraints of mechanised production, is to question the role and function of jewellery,.
"Is it a body ornament or is it art? From what we can see in this particular exhibition it seems to be both."
The exhibition, Modern Designer Jewellery 1960 - 2000: A New Setting, runs until January 6.
