A MASKED robber pointed a gun at an 18-year-old shopgirl before handcuffing her and escaping with hundreds of pounds.
The terrified girl was not injured but was treated for severe shock after the robbery on Thursday.
She was opening up a newsagent in Billingham Town Square shortly 5.30am when the man, wearing a stocking over his head, approached her with a gun.
Although still handcuffed, the assistant was able to telephone the police.
The robber was in his late 30s, 5ft 6in, of medium build but broad shouldered. He had a dark complexion, and wore a black round hat, black padded jacket, blue jeans and Kappa trainers.
Anyone with any information is asked to call police on (01642) 302226.
