GERMAN visitors were welcomed to east Cleveland this week.
The 45 guests from the area's twin town, Troisdorf, are enjoying a week-long visit, which has included trips to Whitby, Pickering and York, as well as a tour of the borough.
They also enjoyed a trip down memory lane at a classic car display by the Teesside Yesteryear Motor Club.
Redcar and Cleveland Mayor Norah Cooney officially welcomed the German visitors yesterday, with the help of the Saltburn Victorians group.
This year's guests include Irmgard Jaax, the widow of former Troisdorf burgermeister Hans Jaax, who helped set up the links 12 years ago.
Since then, more than 3,500 Troisdorf and Redcar and Cleveland residents have taken part in exchange trips.
"Many of the visitors come to see us every year or so and stay with their regular friends," said Kim Arnold, hospitality organiser for the Redcar and Cleveland Twinning Association.
"This year we have a number of visitors who have come for the first time, including members of the German town's darts club."
Host families provide bed, breakfast and evening meals for their guests.
"Many people have developed long-lasting friendships," said chairman Peter Sotheran, who has made 20 visits to Troisdorf, which is between Bonn and Cologne.
