COUNCIL officials will apply to the Education Secretary for permission to sell some of Darlington's school playing fields to fund a tennis centre.
Darlington Borough Council's Cabinet backed the plan to sell land at Longfield Comprehensive School at a recent meeting. It must now be approved by the Education Secretary for the sale to go ahead.
As reported in last week's Northern Echo, money from the sale is intended for a tennis centre, a proposal backed by the Lawn Tennis Association and Sport England.
But the decision has angered some residents, who say the tennis centre would not meet the needs of the school or community as successfully as the playing fields do.
