FORMER Scots Guard Peter Jacobson was stunned when he opened his front door to find a pipes and drums band on the doorstep.

The long-distance lorry driver from St Andrew's Close, Aycliffe Village, was celebrating his 62nd birthday with his wife Sheila, daughter Lorraine, grandsons Keiron and James, and other members of his family, when he received the surprise visit.

Members of Newton Aycliffe Pipes and Drums Band serenaded Mr Jacobson with several tunes before wishing him a happy birthday. The surprise had been arranged by Mrs Jacobson, who had approached town councillor Billy Blenkinsop for help with the idea.

Councillor Blenkinsop said: "It is something I was asked to set up on behalf of Mrs Jacobson to celebrate her husband's birthday. We certainly do things differently in Aycliffe Village.''

Neighbours gathered on the doorstep to enjoy the music and one woman danced a Highland Fling.

Mr Jacobson said: "I was a beautiful surprise.''
