A RETAIL chain is taking steps to help a charity appeal in North Yorkshire.
The North Eastern and Cumbrian Co-op has donated £1,500 to Whitby's 199 Steps appeal.
Fundraisers are hoping to raise £170,000 to restore the steps, which lead up to St Mary's Church.
The steep steps are a major attraction in the resort and have been in existence since the 16th Century.
The grant, from the community dividend fund, will go towards a new handrail, as the current one is in a dangerous condition. The money will also pay for a bench.
