A TOTAL of £30m is to be spent on 4,600 homes during the next five years.
Scarborough council, which also covers Whitby, Filey and more than 100 villages, is in the final stages of negotiations to sell its housing stock to Yorkshire Coast Homes, a newly formed housing association.
Richard Adamson, association director, said the money would provide every home with central heating and double glazing, and new bathrooms and kitchens.
Mr Adamson said: "Unlike the council, Yorkshire Coast Homes will not be restricted by government spending restrictions. It means we can borrow the money from a national lending institution".
