Myths and legends of Hartlepool will be put in the spotlight on Monday.
A free guided walk around the town's Headland will take in the ghost of the Grey Lady, tales of the Hartlepool monkey, and the story of how fishermen spread their nets to halt the spread of cholera. The walk starts at the Heugh Lighthouse, Moor Terrace, at 6.30pm and will last until around 8pm. People are advised to bring a torch and children must be accompanied by an adult. CELEBRATION EVENING: Pupils and staff at Thornaby Community School will hold an achievement evening on Tuesday, September 30. More than 150 students will receive awards for effort as well as for citizenship, attendance and team performance. The school will also celebrate the success of the TES Newsday Team which gained distinction for its newspaper in an annual competition. Parents, governors, staff and invited guests will join students at 7pm in the School Hall.
SCHOOL REUNION: A staff reunion is being organised for Manor School, Owton Manor Lane, Hartlepool which opened in 1966. It was originally a secondary modern, before becoming a comprehensive and is now a technology college. The re-union will take place, in Hartlepool Masonic Hall, on October 11, at 7.30pm. ROAD PROJECT: A section of Vine Street, in Norton, near Malton, will be closed from next Tuesday for five days for pavement reconstruction work to be carried out.
SCHOOL GIFT: Northallerton builders merchants Builder Center, of Standard Way, has given a £100 boost to the Dales School at nearby Morton-on-Swale. The cash will go towards the redesign of the gardens at the special needs school.
GARDEN QUERIES: St Marl's Church at Newby, Scarborough, is hosting a gardeners' question time session in aid of its community hall refurbishment next Friday. Tickets are £3 including supper and there will also be a plant sale.
ROAD CLOSURE: Motorists are being reminded of the week-long closure of Sutton Bank beginning on Monday. Highways engineers are using the opportunity to resurface a section of the A170.
PLANT PROJECT: The £370,000 redevelopment of the 20-year-old plant centre at Castle Howard, near Malton, is expected to be completed early next year.
FUNGI DAY: Countryside wardens at the Guisborough Forest and Walkway are planning a walk in the woods on Sunday, October 5, from 2pm to 4pm, to discover more about the fungi growing in the area. Entry fee is £1. Call (01287) 631132 for details.
PRESSURE CHECKS: Shoppers at the Asda store, in Billingham town centre, will be offered free blood pressure tests in store on Saturday. Anyone wanting to take part should call at the customer services desk from 10am to 4pm.
