Haughton and Axa Insurance faced each other when Haughton stared the game in a positive mood and were rewarded early on when Andy MacLeod burst through the midfield to fire home a tremendous shot with the outside of his foot into the bottom corner of the Axa goal.
Haughton continued to be the aggressors but were caught on the break when Axa burst down the left and Chris Wilson fired a low shot in from close range.
The game continued in the manner it had started in but Axa then suffered the sending off of star player Chris Baines and Haughton responded with a quick fire double from Paul Cooper, his first came from a corner where Cooper rose above everybody to head home.
Ten-man Axa came out fighting in the second half but it was Haughton who got the breakthrough when a fine cross from the right was headed home by Cooper to complete his hat-trick, Axa though refused to lie down and they gave themselves some hope when Barry Foster hit a superb volley from the edge of the box, but it was only hope, as Haughton rounded of the scoring when man of the match Andy MacLeod hit a delightful chip from 25 yards that dipped late into the net to make the final score 5-2 to the home side.
Sherwoods put their league form behind them with a 3-0 win at the Falchion, while Newton Cap and Highland Laddie played out a seven goal thriller with the Cappers winning 4-3.
Goodfellas went through to the next round of the Third Division League Cup after a 1-0 victory over St Augustines. The game started well with both teams hitting the woodwork early on, the highlight of the first half was an Emrhys Sheldon shot from ten yards out which looked to have crossed the line only for the referee to wave play on after St Augustines defence had cleared. With the teams going into the break level at 0-0 the second half continued to be highly entertaining with both keepers, Gary Riseborough for Goodfellas and Paul Stanton for St Augustines making a string of fine saves to keep the scores level.
On 75 minutes the home side broke the deadlock when Phil Cornforth latched on to a through ball and finished well from 15 yards. It gave the visitors little time to get back into the game and some resolute play by the Goodfellas saw the Aycliffe side through to the next round.
