WHEN proud father John Furniss listens to his son, Peter, playing the Mozart Clarinet Concerto next weekend, he will be remembering how much joy music brought to his wife, Joan.

Mrs Furniss was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer last year - although the couple were still able to celebrate their ruby wedding anniversary last month.

Mrs Furniss's next goal was to be there for Peter's concert but, sadly, she died earlier this month.

"The day before Joan died, I was desperate to find ways to help her,'' said Mr Furniss, who lives in Hunton, North Yorkshire.

"I suddenly remembered I had a recording of Peter playing the Mozart Clarinet Quintet, so I took it into hospital for her. She listened with rapt attention and told me afterwards that nothing could have given her greater pleasure."

Peter will be flying in from a tour in Germany to join the Cleveland Chamber Orchestra in a programme of Mozart, Lutoslawski, Schumann and Kodaly.

The first concert is on Saturday, September 27, at 7.30pm in the Zetland Christian Community Centre in Richmond, with a repeat performance at Stokesley Parish Church on Sunday, September 28, at 8pm.
