CHILDREN from the Stockton area enjoyed a day messing about on the river yesterday.
The primary school pupils took part in the second Bellboat Festival, on the Tees, which is designed for fun and to encourage team spirit.
A bellboat is a twin-hold boat with ten seats and children have to work together to row for maximum speed.
The eight to 12-year-olds, some of who had special needs, raced each other and the overall winning school was Oak Tree Primary, in Stockton.
Sally Mulcaster, sports development officer at Stockton Council which organised the event, said: "It's about team work but mainly it's about fun. I think all the children really enjoyed themselves."
It was funded by the Children's Fund and schools included Tilery Primary, Bishopgarth, Abbey Hill, Redbrook Primay, Oak Tree Primary and Preston Primary.
