John Hewitt of Witton Gilbert guided his Rinks team to an even more spectacular victory in the Durham City Council Bowls Finals held at Belmont than he did last week when he pulled out a remarkable last wood to beat the Leeholme team in the Durham Bowling League Rinks Final held at Vane Tempest.
The Witton team of Donny Parkin, Tommy Wiseman, Wilf Sedman and John Hewitt, as skip, trailed the Nevilles Cross team of Ian Hudson, Ray Hindson, Terry Greenough and Brian Slinn by five shots going into the final end. Once again John Hewitt pulled out a final wood to edge out the Nevilles Cross bowl on the jack to take six shots and victory.
There was also a nail biting finish to the Mixed Pairs when George Hutchinson and Pat Sanderson of Bowburn were taken to an extra end before they edged to a 19-18 victory over Phil Whitfield and Val Newton of Kelloe.
The prizes were presented by Grenville Holland, who holds the Portfolio for Leisure for Durham City Council. He was accompanied by Jeff Riddell, the Head of Environmental and Leisure Services for Durham City Council. The secretarial duties for the season were performed by Ian Hudson.
