A WANDER around a pretty Wear Valley village, famed for its 7th Century Saxon church, heads a new programme of health walks.

As part of the Wear Walking for Health initiative, which aims to improve health and physical fitness by encouraging walking, a series of Sunday outings have been arranged.

The walks are designed to suit most levels of fitness and aim to provide a gentle introduction to walking, which is one of the most effective and easiest forms of exercise available.

The first walk, on Sunday, visits the village of Escomb, leaving Bishop Auckland College at 10am for the 2.5mile route.

Other walks are: October 19, Wolsingham, starting at Demesne picnic area; November 16, Willington Dene, starting at the health centre; December 14, Brandon Walkway, starting at the Auckland Castle entrance; January 11, Auckland Way, starting at Coundon station car park; February 8, Willington, starting at the health centre. All walks start at 10am.

Wear Valley District Council has teamed up with The Northern Echo, Northumbria Water and Durham Dales Primary Care Trust to launch the Chance To Live campaign to promote healthy lifestyles.

A key element of that is the promotion of regular exercise, which can help to increase stamina, fitness and confidence, reduce the risk of heart disease, strengthen bones, control body weight, and reduce high blood pressure, stress and anxiety.
