TIME is running out for North-East firms to claim a share of £10m earmarked to boost skills in the workplace.
The eQ8 scheme, in Tyne and Wear, is one of 12 pilot projects throughout the UK, working with employers to provide tailor-made training for staff.
The scheme is a partnership between the Learning and Skills Council and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
It offers subsidised courses in NVQ qualifications and can also pay wages for workers while they study.
Barney McGill, regional development worker for the TUC, said: "Hundreds of businesses are already reaping the benefits but there is still funding available for others to take advantage and we want to spread that message.
"As we've been stressing to our members, it's not only training subsidies that are available but also wage compensation. Sometimes this has been a barrier to training in smaller companies but there are no excuses now."
The cash is only available until next August, when all training must be completed.
