EXPERTS from the BBC's Antiques Roadshow were able to shed light on a piece of military history when they came to the region yesterday.
A statue, which has been looked after for years by volunteer soldiers from North Yorkshire, was shown to the experts at Scarborough.
It was presented to the East Yorkshire Riding Volunteers, but now graces the cabinet of the 4/5th Battalion, Green Howards -a TA unit based in Scarborough.
Sergeant Natalie Bliss said: "We just thought we would take it down to the show to see what they could tell us about it.
"We knew it used to be presented to the winner of the marching and shooting competition but, these days, it is only really used for display at regimental dinners."
Experts said the statue was made of silver in 1906 and is worth about £3,000.
Sgt Bliss said: "We were certainly surprised by the value. It was always kept safe before, but it will certainly be guarded carefully in future."
The show will be broadcast later this year.
