Darlington Mowden Park: DMP 3rds struggled against a good Horden 2nd team which looked over a stone a man heavier, but the generally young Mowden side accreditted themselves well, and never gave up.
Twelve minutes into the game and a Horden penalty openend the scoring, with an excellent kick from their fly half from the side line. Two minutes later a scrum pushed Mowden back over their line where the No.8 broke off and scored.
Mowden struggled all afternoon against the big Horden Pack.
A missed clearance kick by Horden saw Mowdens fullback Matthew Barker race elusively from the half way line to score for Mowden, captain Stuart Edwardson converted to end the first half.
From the restart a miss-catch by Mowden allowed hordens no8 to intercept the ball and score a converted try. Horden ran in a further two converted try's, an excellent drop goal, and a penalty. Mowden got a deserved concilation try in the dying minutes as scrum half Lee Radcliffe took a quick tap penalty, moved the ball along the backs to allow winger Alan evans score in the corner. Final result Horden 2nds 35 Mowden park 3rds 12.
A first round tie of the Powergen Cup saw Chester come up against Ponteland, a side from a league higher and in great form.
Due to injury and unavailability, Chester started brightly and opened the scoring with a penalty from fly half Mick Welsh.
Ponteland's back's looked dangerous but Chester's defence held for the first quarter until the dam burst. Ponteland's impressive fly half began dictating the game and the away led at half time 28-6 after Cestrians' Welsh added another penalty.
The second half saw Chester's forward's come into prominence however the opposition back line was still running in tries practically unopposed and the game slipped away, from the home side who did not get a kind bounce all afternoon.
Chester-le-Street 2nds XV's 59-19 win over Durham Constabulary was a fine performance by Chester's second string.
Chester started with many of the team playing out of their natural positions which allowed Durham to control and dominate the opening exchanges resulting in them scoring a try from a two man line out. However after ten minutes, Chester settled and dominate the game. Some fine forward play saw Paul Dobbs run in a try from 20 yards which Jeff Thirlaway converted. Durham were still defending well but the Chester attack were giving them a pounding . At this point tries were going in quick and fast from Howie Evans, Andy Stephenson , and Alan Telford leaving Chester well in control at half time. From the kick off Laws caught the ball and charged to the 22 yard line and allowing Telford to score his second try of the game. A 15 minute patch saw Dobbs add another two tries and complete his hat trick in a man of the match performance.
