WEDDING guests at an east Cleveland church are being targeted by thieves looking to steal from the congregation.
The vicar at St Nicholas' Church, in Guisborough, has said he will issue warnings in future to wedding guests to ensure they are more vigilant.
The wedding thefts began in August and have included a woman's handbag being stolen from inside the church straight after a wedding ceremony.
There have also been thefts of handbags and wallets from the grounds of the neighbouring Guisborough Priory, where many couples have their wedding photos taken.
Officials at the historic priory claim the area has become a haunt for drug addicts, with discarded needles found in the area and regularly collected by church staff.
There is some speculation that the thefts may be connected to drug use.
The Reverend Phillip Bishop said: "The thief is taking advantage of people at a time when they are enjoying themselves and their attention is distracted.
"I know of at least three incidents but I don't take all the wedding ceremonies and there could be many more."
It is thought the thieves may be mingling with wedding guests before striking so they are not easily identified.
One victim, who did not want to be named, said: "I feel very angry and furious that people can interfere with my personal things. I reported the incident to the police."
St Nicholas' church is already facing increased insurance premiums after a break-in earlier this year.
A burglar broke into the church through a stained glass window and stole a donations box which contained cash.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "We have only had one report of theft of a purse from the church this year and inquiries are on-going into it.
"We have had reports of break-ins to vehicles in the area near the church."
She urged anyone with information which could help the police investigation, to call (01642) 326326.
