FAITH may be able to move mountains - but when clergy from a cathedral were faced with a heavy lifting task yesterday, they had to summon some extra muscle.

Ripon Cathedral is hosting its first black-tie dinner this evening and, to make space in the nave for 300 guests, 50 solid oak pews had to be moved aside.

The Dean and Chapter called for a little additional assistance from the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Firefighters spent yesterday morning gently lifting and shifting the 150-year-old furniture until the nave was empty.

Speakers at the Night of a Thousand Angels include former Bishop of Durham, David Jenkins, and former Yorkshire Businesswoman of the Year, Judith Donovan CBE.

Among the guests expected are High Sheriff of North Yorkshire, Simon Bostock, Lady Brittan of Spennithorne, and Lady Deidre Curteis of Markenfield, along with representatives from several leading companies across Yorkshire.

Musical accompaniment will be provided by the cathedral's girl choristers.

The proceeds will go towards the Ripon Cathedral Development Fund which has so far raised £450,000 this year though events and sponsorship.
