THE BISHOP of Jarrow visited a junior school to talk about his role.
The Rt Rev John Pritchard visited Chester-le-Street CE Junior School in Hilda Park, South Pelaw, near Chester-le-Street, last Wednesday, where he led an assembly and showed children his working outfit of a mitre, staff, cape and stole.
Headteacher Joan Twomey said the bishop was invited to the school as children are studying the theme of community. So far, a nurse, police officer and councillor have visited the pupils to talk about their jobs. Mrs Twomey said: "He explained the symbolism of the vestments, such as why the mitre is the shape it is, because it reminds people of spirit resting on the early disciples and it points towards God." Pupils presented the bishop with thank you card.
