A PRIMARY school has responded to concerns about the concentration levels of children who do not eat a proper breakfast.
Ferryhill Station Primary School has established its own breakfast club, which is proving a hit with children and promoting healthy eating.
Headteacher Val Jago said: "We all know that breakfast is a good start to the day for everyone, but there has been a lot of research about children's reactions slowing up if they don't have a proper breakfast.
"We had been trying to get a breakfast club started anyway because a number of children had been coming to school with little or no breakfast."
The Ferryhill breakfast club is open from 8.15am to 8.45am every morning and each item, which can include cereal, fresh fruit or toast, costs 10p.
The club got off to a flying start thanks to staff at the Asda store in Spennymoor, who donated food and breakfast goody bags for children.
The club has been an instant success, with up to 20 children attending each day and tucking into breakfast.
