POLICE are inviting 16-year-olds to get behind the wheel as part of an event to educate young people before they take to the road.
Megadrive is targeting young women and those with special needs in particular to take part in the event at Redcar Racecourse which will offer driving lessons, theory books and a chance for the youngsters to drive.
PC Paul McCabe said: "This scheme sets out to highlight both the pitfalls and pleasure of owning and driving a car.
"Last year proved a great success with more than 200 youngsters taking part and we are hoping for the same again this year.
"It is a brilliant opportunity to get behind the wheel of a car and also to be educated about them at the same time."
The teenagers will learn about the pitfalls to avoid when buying a car, advice on insurance, hazard perception and maintenance.
The event, set up jointly by Langbaurgh Police and Redcar and Cleveland Borough council's Road Safety Department will take place between October 21 and 28.
The cost of the event is £4 and anyone interested is asked to contact PC Paul McCabe on (01642) 302 068.
