EIGHT hundred balloons filled the sky above Bishop Auckland when school pupils did their bit to support an education scheme.
Pupils from three secondary and nine primary schools in the town sold balloons for £1 each to take part in a sponsored race from St John's RC Comprehensive School on Thursday.
Each balloon carries a label with the seller's name and school details. People who find them are asked to call the number on the tag.
All the schools in the cluster share expertise and have learning mentors who offer support to pupils who want to make an extra effort with their education.
Money raised from the event will go towards activities for the group.
Senior mentor Pam Norman said: "We help children fulfil their potential, some want to advance their learning and some need to top up their lessons in certain subjects.
"Mentors are neither teachers nor parents, so can sometimes be more approachable for youngsters.
"The balloon race is a fun way for the children to get involved in raising funds for the scheme. Hopefully, someone will find a balloon in Norway."
Nicole Hannah, a year eight pupil at Bishop Barrington Comprehensive School, won a gift voucher for selling 70 balloons. The seller of the balloon which travels furthest will also win a voucher.
